Description
Microsoft recommends the hosted remote server at https://mcp.dev.azure.com/{organization} (Streamable HTTP, Microsoft Entra ID OAuth); send the X-MCP-Readonly header to restrict it to read-only tools. The remote server will eventually replace the local one. The local server (npx @azure-devops/mcp, Node.js 20+) runs over stdio with a PAT or Entra ID and is the fallback for clients that cannot authenticate to the remote server with Entra ID (the docs name Claude Desktop and Codex; Cursor and Claude Code need a custom Entra app registration).
