Microsoft recommends the hosted remote server at `https://mcp.dev.azure.com/{organization}` (Streamable HTTP, Microsoft Entra ID OAuth); send the `X-MCP-Readonly` header to restrict it to read-only tools. The remote server will eventually replace the local one. The local server (`npx @azure-devops/mcp`, Node.js 20+) runs over stdio with a PAT or Entra ID and is the fallback for clients that cannot authenticate to the remote server with Entra ID (the docs name Claude Desktop and Codex; Cursor and Claude Code need a custom Entra app registration).
